Artist Statement
It all began in a public library where I discovered fiction was make-believe. Not true! Completely fabricated? At the age of seven, I began to create convincing stories from illustrations in primary school textbooks. I ignored the text and described complete narratives from illustrations only. This scheme worked for a while, then a reading comprehension problem was exposed. Remedial coursework was required.
On the first day of seventh grade, my social studies teacher handed me a peculiar illustrated American History textbook. As I flipped through its pages, I discovered that students from a prior year had defaced the illustrations. I spent my time extending the art, adding new characters, buildings, and backgrounds. After I was disciplined, I was issued a clean textbook.
Over the last 50 years, I have employed a stare decisis method (based on precedent) to create theme-based artwork, much like the defaced textbook of my formative years. My toolbox employs a fabricated narrative that incorporates social commentary, repetitive motifs, public domain artwork, and a recurring black shape, the Incognitum. The point of view is deliberately obfuscated. The resulting images and texts are familiar yet dreamlike, offering a thought-provoking interpretation of history.

The No Littering Sign Replacement Program began in 2015. In 2017, the first bare pole was discovered at the NY Route 22 Boston Corners Parking Area. The replacement sign remained installed for over a year before it was removed.

In 2020, I began hosting a curated rental home—Millstone Manor—where I could display paintings, prints, and maps from my collection.
